Primary Reasons Why Your Website Is Not Going Up on Google Search Results

After doing a lot of on-page and off-page SEO, you may be wondering why your website is not showing up on at least top 20 search results of Google for a very long period of time. This may be happening because you are not aware of what is going on or simply blind because you are too busy focusing on the unimportant things. Don't just limit your thinking to the things you already know. It may be time for you to check up your site for all kinds of errors.

Here are some of the mistakes you might not want to have in your site:

1. Too much broken links - simply revisit all the pages and fix the broken links

2. Too much link redirection - the server-side 301 redirect is the best way to use if you are moving to a new domain or if you are restructuring your site. In this way, you can revisit your webpages and fix the broken links if there's any. However, if you have already fixed all the broken links within your site, you should not use 301 redirect anymore. The URLs on the SERPs will update automatically.

3. Too much useless indexed pages cluttering the search results - you can see all the pages within your site that are indexed by Google by simply typing site:www.yourdomain.com on Google search box. Remove all the unwanted pages by using Google Webmaster Tools.

Warning: Be very careful when doing this. You might not want to remove your site's homepage. If you accidentally deleted it, you can simply cancel the request.

4. Redundant links on webpages - you can disallow the Google bots from crawling the redundant links on your site's webpages by applying the rel="nofollow" to specific links like:

Sign In or Register links

  • Private pages such as admin dashboard
  • Tags or category pages - this mainly cause duplicated pages from the search results
  • External Links pointing to your social media and partners' websites

5. Using of wrong robots.txt file - if disallow search engine robots from crawling the most useful pages in your site, you have a big problem. You can only use robots.txt file to list all the pages in your site that shouldn't be crawled and indexed by search engines. Some of these are:

  • Admin Dashboard page
  • Members' Dashboard page
  • Sign In or Register Pages
  • Tags or Categories

6. Over On-page Search Engines Optimization

  • Keyword Stuffing
  • Too much internal links

7. Wrong Off-page Strategy - due to the current algorithm update by Google called Penguin Update, many websites have lost their ranks in Google. Your site may be hit by the Google Penguin Update if you are still doing these methods:

  • Linking to sites with little or no outbound links/backlinks
  • Linking to sites participating in link schemes - link exchange, link farming
  • Linking to sites that are not relevant to your site's content
  • Linking to "bad neighborhood" sites - sites containing adult content
